Andy Gabel began winning US and North American championships in speed skating, both short- and long-track, as a juvenile in 1979. He was on the US Short-Track Team from 1979-98, the longest tenure ever. During that time he won over 75 international medals in addition to his three Olympic appearances and one silver medal. Among his medals were a gold in the 500 at the 1989 World Winter University Games, two silvers at the 1991 version of that event, and bronzes in the 1,000 and 1,500 in 1989.
Gabel later graduated from Marquette University and has become a successful investment banker. He was elected to the US Speedskating Board of Directors in 1994 as an athlete representative, was named a Vice President in 1999, and became President in 2002. He has also served as a member of the ISU Short Track World Cup Management Commission (1998-2002), and later served as the Chairman of the ISU Short Track Technical Committee. Gabel was the Project Manager for short track speed skating at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.
