Date3 – 12 August 1948
StatusOlympic
LocationTorbay, Torquay (Star and Swallow Course)
Participants38 from 17 countries
FormatPoints awarded for placement in each race. Best six of seven scores to count for final placement.

The Star was raced on a 10 nautical mile (18.5 km) course, slightly more inshore than the course used by the Stars and Swallows. Paul and Hilary Smart, a father-son team, won the second and fourth race, and had a huge lead after five races. They could actually have skipped the final two races and won the gold medal by almost 500 points, but they raced, although they were disqualified in the sixth race, and placed only sixth in the seventh outing. The second-placed team, the Cuban crew of Carlos de Cárdenas Culmell and Carlos de Cárdenas Plá, were also a father and son. They were only in fifth place after six races, but finished second in the final race to move up to silver. The fifth-place Italian boat, Legionario, was helmed by Agostino Straulino, who won eight consecutive European Championships in the Sar from 1949-56, and returned in 1952 to win Olympic gold and in 1956 to add an Olympic silver.
