The 1964 aquatics events were held at the Kokuritsu Yoyogi Kyogijo (Yoyogi National Gymnasium) in the Shibuya section of Tokyo. Seating over 13,000 people, the facility had been built between 1961-64 specifically for the Tokyo Olympics. It was the first indoor pool for Olympic diving, although this would become somewhat standard, going outdoors again only in 1984 (Los Angeles), 1992 (Barcelona), and 2004 (Athens).
There were four diving events – 3-metre springboard and 10-metre platform for men and women, which remained the standard Olympic diving program through 1996. The men’s events were both won by United States’ divers, as they had done since 1912, and Lesley Bush won the women’s platform. Germany’s Ingrid Krämer, who had won both events in 1960, returned as Ingrid Engel-Krämer to repeat her springboard gold medal. United States’ men swept the springboard medals, the last medal sweep in Olympic diving, which cannot occur again under current rules, as only two divers per nation have been allowed since 1984.
