Medal Events | 8 |
The fencing competitions of the 1964 were at the Memorial Hall on the campus of Waseda University in Tokyo. The venue also held the fencing portion of the modern pentathlon. The same eight events that were contested in Rome, six for men and two for women, were held in Tokyo. All eight Olympic titles went to fencers who came from behind the Iron Curtain with Hungary as the most successful nation in terms of gold medals with 4 and the Soviet Union winning more medals in total than any other country. The only fencer to win two gold medals was Ildikó Rejtő-Ujlaky, the Hungarian female foilist. Poland, through Egon Franke, won a first Olympic title while the French recovered from a disastrous performance in Tokyo to win five medals albeit without claiming gold.
