Rowing at the 1964 Summer Olympics took place in Japan’s Toda Rowing Course, which had been constructed originally for the cancelled 1940 Summer Olympics and refurbished in 1958 after the success of Tokyo’s new Olympic bid. The 1964 program remained that same as it had been since 1924 and would continue to be until 1976, when it was expanded to include women and the men’s quadruple sculls. The United States returned to its traditionally dominant position at the top of the medal rankings with four, two gold, one silver, and one bronze, while the Soviet Union was the only other nation to win more than one event, aided by Vyacheslav Ivanov’s third consecutive victory in the single sculls. Meanwhile, by entering a crew into the coxed eights event, South Korea made its Olympic rowing début at the Tokyo Games.
