The big story in boxing at München was the emergence of Cuba as a dominant nation. Cuban boxers won three gold medals and five medals in 1972, led by their heavyweight Teófilo Stevenson, who won the first of his three consecutive gold medals in the heaviest class, and was awarded the Val Barker Trophy as the top boxer of the Olympic tournament. The Soviet Union won only two medals, but both of them were gold. Hungary and Poland each won four medals, with both winning one gold medal.
The United States had one of its worst Olympic boxing performances in memory, winning only one event, that the light-welterweight by Ray Seales, adding three additional bronze medals. Of the 1972 boxing gold medalists, only Yugoslavian light-hearvyweight Mate Parlov would have a top professional career.
