The 2004 judo tournament was conducted in Ano Liossia Olympic Hall in the center of Athina. There was no change in the program or the format of events, with men and women competing in seven weight classes each, for 14 events overall. The tournament was marked by the dominance of the Japanese. They won gold medals in eight of the 14 weight classes, more than all other nations combined, and added two silver medals, winning medals in 10 of the 14 events. Among the women, Japan won six medals, of seven possible, of which five were gold, including winning the four heaviest weight classes.
