The 2000 judo tournament was conducted in the Gymnasium at the Beijing Science and Technical University. There was no change in the program or the format of events, with men and women competing in seven weight classes each, for 14 events overall. Japan was again the top nation, winning four gold medals and seven overall, though nothing like in 2004 when they won eight titles and 10 medals.
