This was the first Alpine event of the Cortina Winter Olympics. Ossi Reichert had been silver medalist in the slalom at the Oslo Winter Olympcs, but having an injured an ankle in 1954, she was unable to compete at that year’s World Championships. The 1954 giant slalom World Champion was France’s Lucienne Schmith, but she did not compete in Cortina. Reichert was the first starter and she left little suspense as her time of 1:56.5 held up for the gold medal, winning by 1.3 seconds over Austrian Josefine “Putzi” Frandl.
