Format	Scoring by negative points, with negative points given for any result short of a fall (win by fall-0; win by decision-1; draw-2; loss by decision-3; loss by fall-4). Accumulation of 6 negative points eliminated the wrestler. When three or fewer wrestlers remained, they advanced to a final round, with preliminary results carried forward.

The overwhelming favorite was Japanese Osamu Watanabe, the 1962-63 World Champion, who came to the 1964 Olympics with a winning streak of 180 consecutive matches. He won his first three matches by falls and then won two decisions to advance to the final round. Having already defeated one finalist, Stancho Ivanov, the 1960 silver medalist, Watanabe secured the gold medal with a victory by decision over the other finalist, Soviet Georgian Nodar Khokhashvili, for his 186th consecutive victory. Watanabe was not scored on during the tournament, and then ended his competitive career. Ivanov and Khokhashvili also wrestled a final round match, which ended in a draw. Ivanov was awarded the silver medal based on lower bodyweight.
