Format	Scoring by negative points, with negative points given for any result short of a fall (win by fall-0.0; win by superior decision-0.0; win by decision-1.0; draw-2.0; loss by decision-3.0; loss by superior decision-4.0; loss by fall-4.0). Accumulation of 6 negative points eliminated the wrestler, but a wrestler could not be eliminated after a victory. When three or fewer wrestlers remained, they advanced to a final round, with preliminary results carried forward.

At one time Finland produced many of the world’s best wrestlers, but they had not won an Olympic gold medal since 1956. Nobody expected that to change in Montréal as Soviet Farkhat Mustafin had won the 1976 Europeans and the 1974-75 World Championships. The final round matched Mustafin, Yugoslavian Ivica Frgić, and Finland’s Pertti Ukkola. Ukkola had won a bronze medal at the 1975 Worlds, but his 6-5 decision victory over Mustafin in round two was considered a big upset. His final match was just as close, a 5-4 victory over Frgić which brought the Finn the gold medal. He would later win the 1977 World Championships, with the same podium as in Montréal, with Mustafin second and Frgić third. Ukkola also won the 1977 European Championships, again with Mustafin in second place.
