The favorites were the last two World Champions. Korean Sim Gwon-Ho had won in 1998 and was the Olympic gold medalist in 1996 as a light-flyweight. Cuban Lázaro Rivas was the 1999 World and Pan American Games Champion. The two were easily the class of the class and met in the final, where Sim overwhelmed Rivas, winning 8-0. The bronze medal went to North Korean Kang Yong-Gyun, who defeated Ukrainian Andriy Kalashnykov, 7-0. Sim’s gold medal was his ninth championship at a major international since 1993.
