Ukrainian Elbrus Tedieiev had had a very long career, winning a World title in 1995, and winning Worlds again in 1999 and 2002. He won a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympics, but struggled at Sydney in 2000 and did not approach the podium. Tedieiev made it to the final in Athina where he met unheralded American Jamill Kelly. Kelly had never won a state high school title, an NCAA title, and, until 2004, a US national title, but when he did the latter earlier in 2004, he made the US Olympic Team. In the semi-finals he upset Russian Makhach Murtazaliyev, the 2004 European Champion. Kelly had come a long way, but the final was an easy victory for Tedieiev, who went ahead 5-0, and held on to win, 5-1. Tedieiev retired after the 2004 Olympics and entered politics, becoming a People’s Deputy of Ukraine in 2006.
