There was no clear favorite in the women’s sprint as the four World Cup sprints in the 2025/26 season had been won by four different women – Swedes [Linn Svahn] and Joanna Hagström, Finland’s Jasmi Joensuu, and the aptly named Norwegian, Kristine Skistad. Sweden’s Jonna Sundling was the defending gold medalist from Beijing 2022 and had won the event at the 2025 World Championships, just ahead of American Jessie Diggins.
Sweden declared themselves early, taking the first three places in qualifying, led by Svahn, followed by Sundling and Hagström, with Maja Dahlqvist, the Beijing 2022 silver medalist, in seventh place. Joenssu placed fourth followed by Swiss challenger Nadine Fähndrich.
The quarter-finals saw Diggins, who had injured ribs in a collision in the skiathlon at Trentino, place only fourth in heat four and fail to advance. Three of the Swedes moved on but Hagström was third in heat five and did not make the semi-finals.
The semi-finals were won by Sundling, with Svahn second in heat one, and Norway’s Julie Bjervig Drivenes taking heat two, well ahead of Dahlqvist, who qualified easily for the final. The final would be three Swedish women, two Norwegians, with Skistad joining Drivenes, and American [Julia Kern], considered a long shot for a medal.
The final was basically a race between Svahn and Sundling with Svahn pulling away to win the sprint by over 1½ seconds. Behind them Dahlqvist completed the Swedish sweep, the first time any nation had swept the medals in the cross-country sprint, women or men. Drivenes placed fourth while Skistad and Kern, out of contention early, basically just ski jogged to the finish and placed fifth and sixth respectively.
