The reigning champion Andy Murray was hoping for his third Olympic title, while Novak Đoković was looking for his first singles title. The Serb was clear favourite in Tokyo, having won eight Grand Slam titles since the last Olympics and, shortly before the Olympics, he equalled Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal’s record of 20 Grand Slams. Đoković also went into the Tokyo Olympics hoping to win the fourth leg of tennis’s “Golden Slam”, achieved only once previously, by Steffi Graf in 1988.
The men’s singles was as much about the top players missing, as much as those who were playing. Amongst those not competing were Federer, Nadal, Nick Kyrgios, Dominic Thiem, Roberto Bautista, and Stan Wawrinka. Andy Murray was a shock last-minute withdrawal from the singles due to injury.
Đoković met the fourth seed Alexander Zverev of Germany in the semi-final. Neither man had lost a set going into the match. The Serbian won the first set 6-1, but lost the next two 3-6, 1-6. Karen Khachanov of the ROC beat Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta, conqueror of Medvedev, in the other semi.
Đoković then missed out on a medal by losing in three sets to Carreno Busta in the bronze medal match, while Zverev beat Khachanov in a one-sided match 6-3, 6-1. Zverev became the first German men’s singles champion, and his country’s first medallist since Tommy Haas won silver at Sydney in 2000.
