Britain’s Adam Peaty had won gold in this event in 2016 and 2020 and was back trying for a three-peat. He had set the last five world records and still held the mark, with a time of 56.88 from the 2019 World Championships. However, he had some mental health issues in 2023 and struggled with alcohol use, and was not the heavy favorite he had been in Tokyo.

Peaty was expected to be challenged by China’s Qin Haiyang, who had won the breaststroke trifecta at the 2023 World Championships, and American Nic Fink, the 2024 World Champion.

All three made the final, along with Italy’s Nicolò Martinenghi. Qin held the early lead in the final but had the slowest final lap and would finish only seventh. Peaty took over in the middle of the final lap but was closely tracked by Fink and Martinenghi. The three came to the wall together but Peaty glided into the wall and Martinenghi out-touched him for the gold medal, as Fink and Peaty tied for the silver medal.

Martinenghi won his second medal in the event, after bronze at Tokyo 2020. Fink had also shared silver at the 2023 World Championships, with Martinenghi and the Netherlands’ Arno Kamminga. Peaty’s silver medal made him the first man to win three medals in the 100 metre breaststroke. It was later revealed that Peaty had not felt well on the morning of the final, and the next day he would be diagnosed with COVID-19.
