The No.1 seed was Novak Đoković of Serbia, who was making his fifth Olympic appearance and attempting to complete the Career Golden Slam, after reaching the semi-finals in 2008 (bronze medal), 2012 (fourth place), and 2020 (fourth place). The No. 2 seed was Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, making his Olympic début. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner withdrew before the tournament due to tonsillitis.
In the final, Đoković defeated Alcaraz to win Serbia’s first gold medal in Olympic tennis. As a result, he became the third man, after Andre Agassi and Rafael Nadal to complete the Career Golden Slam. Đoković also became only the second man, after Agassi, to complete the Career Super Slam (Golden Slam plus Davis Cup and ATP World Championship). Đoković also became the first man to win all Big Titles in singles. By winning the gold medal, the Serbian became the oldest men’s singles champion in Olympic tennis, while Alcaraz became the youngest finalist. Đoković also became the first man to win the Olympics without dropping a set during the tournament. En route to victory, he defeated Nadal in their record-extending 60th meeting and their 11th encounter at Stade Roland Garros.
In the bronze medal match, Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti defeated Canada’s Félix Auger-Aliassime. It was Italy’s second Olympic tennis medal, one hundred years after Uberto De Morpurgo won a bronze medal in the men’s singles in 1924. For the second time (after 2012), the same two players contested both the Wimbledon and Olympic men’s singles finals in the same year, with the Wimbledon runner-up going on to win Olympic gold each time.
