Croatia’s Nikola Mektić and Mate Pavić were the defending champions from 2021, but lost in the first round to Dominik Koepfer and Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany. The big sensation of the tournament was the ‘Nadalcaraz’. Representing Spain, their team consisted of two former World No.1 players, the 38-year-old Rafael Nadal, and his partner Carlos Alcaraz, 17 years younger than Nadal. They won their first two matches, but in the quarter-final lost to Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram from the USA.
This tournament marked the final professional appearance of former singles World No. 1, two-time singles gold medalist, and three-time major champion Andy Murray of Great Britain. In his fifth Olympics, Murray partnered Dan Evans, but they were also eliminated in the quarter-final.
Australia’s Matthew Ebden and John Peers defeated the United States’ pair of Krajicek and Ram in the final to win the gold medal. It was Australia’s first Olympic gold medal in tennis since 1996. Ebden was the No. 3 ranked world doubles player during the tournament. Since seedings were determined by the combined ranking of each pair, however, Ebden and Peers were unseeded due to Peers being ranked No. 59 at the time. Because of that, they were the first unseeded pair to win the gold medal since Fernando González and Nicolás Massú from Chile in 2004.
In the bronze medal match, Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul of the United States defeated Czechia’s Tomáš Macháč and Adam Pavlásek. On the same day, Macháč won the mixed doubles competition with Kateřina Siniaková.
