Ruano secured the gold medal, marking her nation’s first-ever Olympic gold. She set a new Olympic record by hitting 45 targets in the final. Italy’s Silvana Stanco claimed the silver with 40 hits, while Australia’s Penny Smith took bronze with 32 hits. The final saw Ruano progressively build her lead, culminating in her record-setting performance.

This victory was historic for Guatemala, as it was the country’s first Olympic gold medal despite 70 years of competition. Ruano’s achievement was celebrated nationwide, highlighting the significance of her win for Guatemalan sports. According to President Arevalo, “the Olympic history of Guatemala is written in golden letters thanks to Adriana Ruano”. Ruano’s gold and Jean Pierre Brol’s bronze in the men’s trap event marked a historically successful Olympic Games for Guatemala in shooting sports.

The defending champion, Zuzana Rehák-Štefečeková, participated but did not advance to the final.
