There was no clear favorite in this event, although British runner Matt Hudson-Smith was probably a slight favorite. Kirani James (GRN), the 2012 gold medalist, was still a contender, as were the 2020 champion, Steven Gardiner (BAH), and the 2016 gold medalist, Wayde van Niekerk. Van Niekerk opted to run only the 200 in Paris, however, and Gardiner withdrew a few days before the event.

James, American Michael Norman, and Hudson-Smith made the final, with James winning the second semi and Hudson-Smith the third, followed by Norman in second. The first semi was won by American Quincy Hall, a former 400 hurdler who had won the USA Olympic Trials. James and Norman got out fast but Trinidad & Tobago’s Jereem Richards led as they entered the backstretch. Richards led at 200 metres in 20.46 but Hudson-Smith took over on the far turn, with Hall nowhere in sight. At the head of the stretch, Hudson-Smith led over Richards and James, with Hall fourth, but seemingly too far back, and Norman out of the medal chase.

Hall refused to concede and pulled ahead of James and Richards, and then outleaned Hudson-Smith in the last few strides, winning gold in 43.40, making him the #4 performer ever, as Hudson-Smith took silver in 43.44, breaking his own European record. Also finishing strongly was Zambia’s Muzala Samukonga, who took bronze just ahead of Richards, with James placing fifth, as Norman faded to last place. It was the deepest-ever 400 metre race, with best-ever marks-for-place set for 2-3-4-5.
