Cuba’s Héctor Vinent was relatively unknown prior to the 1992 Olympics, but he definitely impressed in Barcelona, easily winning the gold medal. His closest fight, if you can call it that, was in the final against Canadian Mark Leduc, Vinent winning 11-1. He won all his matches by decisions, by scores of 27-4, 14-2, 26-3, 13-3, and 11-1. It was the start of a great amateur career for Vinent. He won the 1993 and 1995 World Championships and defended his Olympic gold medal in Atlanta. Leduc turned professional, but only briefly, fighting for one year with a record of 4-1. In 1994 he came out as gay.
