With the two men kept apart in separate halves of the draw, the Olympic final was fully expected to be a repeat of the 2011 World Championships in Baku where Russia’s Misha Aloyan had narrowly outpointed Andrew Selby of Great Britain.

Something that could not have been predicted was the sudden emergence of Cuban Robeisy Ramírez as a major force in the division. Certainly the 18-year-old Ramírez had been a major star as a junior and was already the Pan-American Games champion but he had been easily dealt with by Aloyan at the quarter-final stage at the last world championships. In London he performed like a seasoned veteran and moved imperiously through the rounds whilst dispatching Selby at the quarter-final stage. Aloyan was the victim of an upset in the semi-final so Ramírez instead faced Nyambayaryn Tögstsogt of Mongolia to decide the gold medal.

The final began with both men fighting cautiously and it was only in the final round that the Cuban teenager established a decisive lead. The Cuban fighter became the first boxer to win titles at both the Youth Olympics and at the senior event, having won the bantamweight division (≤54 kg) at the inaugural 2010 Youth Olympics.
