Spain’s Marina Alabau had lost out on a medal in this event at Beijing when she placed only fourth in the medal race. But in London she came through, winning three of the first four races, and taking a large 14-point lead at the end of the 10-race opening series, guaranteeing her a medal, and virtually guaranteeing her the gold. She left no doubt by winning the medal race for an easy gold medal. The other medals went to Finland’s Tuuli Petäjä (silver), and Poland’s Zofia Noceti-Klepacka (bronze). This time the disappointed sailor was Ukrainian Olha Maslivets who placed second in the medal race to just miss out on bronze.

This was scheduled to be the final Olympic windsurfer event, after the event started at the 1984 Olympic Games, as the ISAF had voted to replace it with kitesurfing at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. But that ruling was challenged, and reversed in November 2012, and windsurfing will remain on the Olympic Program for 2016.
