The UIT World Championships were shot in Oslo shortly before the Olympics. These were won by Knut Holmqvist in a shoot-off with the young Canadian George Genereaux, who was only 17 years old. In Helsinki, Hans Liljedahl (SWE) and Hans Aasnæs (NOR) led with 96, with Holmqvist and Genereaux tied for second with 95 birds. On the second day, Genereaux posted the high score with 97, to defeat Holmqvist by one shot. Holmqvist needed a perfect final round of 25, but missed his 24th bird to finish second. Genereaux’s win was a major surprise, especially since he was using an outdated single-barrel rifle.
