Format3 metres springboard.

Micki King led this competition for eight dives, but on her ninth dive, a reverse 1½ layout with 1½ twists, she hit the board with her forearm, fracturing it. This allowed Sue Gossick to take the lead and she held it on the final dive to win the gold medal. King took her final dive but with the injury scored very low and dropped out of the medals. The silver went to Soviet Tamara Pogozheva, who had the best dive of the event, scoring 20.28 points on her final dive, a 1½ somersault with 1½ twists. Pogozheva might have challenged Gossick for the gold with that dive but she had also faltered on dive eight, a forward 2½ pike, which gave her only 10.80 points. Two-time defending champion Ingrid Krämer, now Gulbin-Krämer, was back in México City, but placed only fifth, never really a factor for the gold medal.
