The defending champion was Lesley Bush (USA) who was in Mexico but dove poorly and did not make the final round, placing 20th. The gold medal was won by the surprising Czechoslovakian 16-year-old Milena Duchková, who led after the qualifying and remained at or near the lead after every dive. She was cheered wildly by the Mexican fans, noting, “The loud cheering was not for me, personally, but for my country.” Duchková was challenged by Soviet Nataliya Kuznetsova-Lobanova, and with Soviet tanks having recently invaded Czechoslovakia, she had no supporters as the crowd favored the teenaged Czech. Duchková would come back in 1972 to earn a silver on platform and also won silver at the inaugural World Aquatics Championships in 1973. Ann Peterson won the bronze medal, at least continuing the US streak of winning medals in this event that reached back to 1924.
