The most notable absentee was Jim Mitchel, who was on the American team but had dislocated his shoulder on the boat ride over when he fell as the ship was tossed by a violent storm. Martin Sheridan was not planning on competing in this event, but because of Mitchel’s absence, decided to at the last minute. He made a good effort but was unable to defeat the Greek, Nikolaos Georgantas. This is the only time that this event has been contested at the Olympic Games.
