Participants | 71 from 19 countries |
There was a slight change in the format of the apparatus events in 1984 as eight gymnasts (previously six) qualified for the final round from the team qualifying, still with a maximum of two gymnasts per team. Zoltán Magyar (HUN) had won the gold medal in 1976 and 1980, but retired after the Moskva Olympics. The gold medal in Los Angeles was shared by China’s Li Ning and American Peter Vidmar, who had been second in the individual all-around, in which Ning placed third. Bronze went to Vidmar’s teammate Tim Daggett, both of whom attended UCLA and competed at Pauley Pavilion, which hosted the 1984 Olympic gymnastics competition.
Top eight in individual competition advanced to apparatus final.
