One of the dominant nations in short track speed skating, the South Korean men had not won the Olympic relay title since the sports début in 1992. They were heavily favored in Torino, having won the 2002, 2003 and 2004 World title, and having taking five individual medals already. However, much competition was expected from Canada, which had won the world title in 2005 and the last two Olympic golds.

The final indeed came down to a Canadian-South Korean battle. The two teams were both in the lead numerous times. When it came to the final exchange, Canada was in first, but the Koreans switched to their starting skater An Hyeon-Su, already winner of two gold medals individually. With his patented outside overtaking maneuver, An overtook Canada to get his third gold medal of the Games.
