The 2004 Olympic weightlifting competition took place at the Olympiako Gymnastirio Arsis Varon Nikaias, or the Nikaia Olympic Weightlifting Hall. The venue opened the day after the 2004 Opening Ceremony, on 14 August. It has since been converted to an academic conference and lecture center for the University of Piraeus.
The 2004 weightlifting program was identical to 2000 with eight classes for men and seven for women. China led both the men’s and women’s medal lists, with four medals for each gender, two golds by the men, and three by the women. Turkey and Russia also won four medals on the men’s side, with Turkey the only nation besides China to win two men’s events. Thailand also won four women’s medals and two women’s events.
One weightlifting record that was broken in Athinai was for the number of positive drugs tests, as 12 weightlifters tested positive in 2004, although six of them were caught before the competition and never competed. Only six lifters tested positive after the events, which was less than the eight that occurred at Montréal in 1976.
