Cuba’s Yandro Quintana had won the 2003 Pan American Games and was runner-up at the 2003 Worlds. He won his first three matches without allowing a point, then defeated Ukraine’s Vasyl Fedoryshyn in the semi-finals, 3-1. Quintana’s final opponent was Iranian Masoud Mostafa Jokar. Quintana easily won the gold medal, defeating Mostafa Jokar, 4-0. The bronze medal went to Japan’s Kenji Inoue, who won a narrow victory, 6-5, over Fedoryshyn. Fedoryshyn would move up in weight and win three European titles and an Olympic silver medal in 2008.
