| Olympic Record (Ranking Round, 72 arrows) | 680 / An San KOR / 23 July 2021 | |
The ranking round not only determined the seedings for the individual event, but also the rankings for the Women’s Team and the Mixed Doubles events.
Im Si-Hyeon (KOR), with a score of 694 (out of a possible 720), set a new Olympic record in the women’s individual ranking round, breaking An San’s Olympic record from the 2020 Games. This was also a World record, breaking that of Gang Chae-Yeong from the 2019 World Championships. With her compatriot Nam Su-Hyeon finishing second in the ranking round (also breaking the previous Olympic record), it was thought the Koreans would dominate the elimination rounds, so maintaining their supremacy of the event since its introduction in 1988.
In the early elimination rounds, world-ranked #1 Casey Kaufhold (USA) was defeated by Lei Chien-Ying (TPE) 7-3 in the Round of 32, and current world champion Marie Horáčková (CZE) was defeated by the same scoreline to Nam Su-Hyeon (KOR) in the Round of 16. Diananda Choirunisa (INA) held her nerve twice, requiring shoot-offs to defeat Catalina Gnoriega in the Round of 32 and Bhajan Kaur in the Round of 16. Unfortunately, her luck ran out in the quarter-finals. Competing against Lisa Barbelin (FRA), she had two opportunities to win. In the second one, when needing to score 8 or more with her final arrow to win, she scored a 5! Barbelin then won the shoot-off to advance to the semi-finals. She was the only non-Korean in the semi-finals.
The other semi-finalists were Im Si-Hyeon, who had to work hard to defeat Alejandra Valencia (MEX) 6-4 in the quarter-finals. The path to the semi-finals was more straight forward for the other two Koreans, Jeon Hun-Yeong and Nam Su-Hyeon. In the semi-finals, Im again had to work hard to defeat Jeon by 6-4, whereas Nam had a comfortable 6-0 victory against Barbelin.
The bronze medal match saw Barbelin winning an evenly contested match against Jeon, finally winning 6-4 in the final set, thus denying the Republic of Korea a clean sweep of all the medals. The final saw the two highest ranked archers from the ranking round, although Nam was only 61st in the world rankings. However, Im was in top form to win 7-3, and thus repeated An San’s achievement from the 2020 Games by winning three archery gold medals at the same Games.
