The maximum weight limit in this division had decreased from 52 kg to 51 kg since Tokyo. With reigning champion Galal Yafai (GBR) having turned professional following his Tokyo success and focusing on his professional career, the top two seeds were home favorite and 2022 European champion Billal Bennama (FRA) and reigning World Champion Uzbeki Hasanboy Dusmatov, the Olympic Champion from 2016. Both fighters advanced to the final, Bennama overcoming Roscoe Hill (USA) in the Round of 16 and Cuban Alejandro Claro in the quarter-finals by 3-2 decisions. The semi-final was more straight forward for Bennama, overcoming Junior Alcántara (DOM) on a unanimous decision.

Dusmatov had a slightly easier route to the final, with unanimous wins over Juanmita López (PUR) and David de Pina (CPV), with a split decision in his quarter-final match against Kazakhstani Saken Bibosinov. In a rematch of the 2023 World Championship final, Dusmatov took the title on a unanimous decision from Bennama. In reaching the semi-final, de Pina became the first athlete to win an Olympic medal for Cabo Verde, namely the bronze medal.
