As she had dominated the World Cup series in 2024, winning three of a possible four rounds, Great Britain had hopes that Seonaid McIntosh would be the country’s first female Olympic shooting champion. Zhang Qiongyue of China was the 2023 World Champion, while Switzerland held a strong hand through newly crowned European champ Chiara Leone and reigning Olympic gold medalist Nina Christen.

Neither McIntosh nor Christen performed to their usual standard and could only finish 12th and 21nd, respectively, in the qualifying stage. Instead, the honor of being leading qualifier went to US Army Sergeant Sagen Maddalena, who narrowly edged out Zhang and Leone for the honor.

The lead flipped between the three on several occasions in the final but, after Zhang was eliminated by Maddalena in a shoot-off for silver, it was still apparent that the American would need a superb shot to deprive the Swiss markswoman of the title on the final shot. Leone responded with a 10.8 to end any chance of an American win.
