The favorite was the defending champion Park Seong-Hyeon, the 2001 World Champion, and she led the ranking round, followed by her two teammates. Korea was seemingly on its way, having won every women’s Olympic archery gold medal since the 1984 Olympics. Park would make her way to the final. But in the other semi-final Korean Yun Ok-Hui was upset by China’s Zhang Juanjuan, 115-109. Zhang was the 2001 Asian Champion, but had placed only sixth at the 2007 Worlds, and finished the ranking round in Beijing only 27th. Zhang upset Park in the final 110-109, scoring a nine on her final arrow to win the gold medal. Yun did come through for the bronze medal, giving Korea at least two individual medals in women’s archery at every Olympics since 1984, save for 1996.
