Olympic Record (Match, 12 arrows) | 114 WR / Kim Su-Nyeong KOR / 2 August 1992 |
Korea had become the dominant nation in archery, particularly among the women, but the 1995 World Champion was Moldovan Natalia Valeeva, who would lose in the round of 16 in Atlanta. It was difficult to pick among the Koreans because their team was so strong that players would often compete internationally for 1-2 years and then be surpassed by the new players coming up.
In Atlanta the ranking round was led by Ukrainian Lina Herasymenko, followed by China’s He Ying. He advanced to the final, surviving a shoot-off victory in round two against Norway’s Wenche-Lin Hess. Her opponent in the final was another relatively unknown Korean, Kim Gyeong-Uk. Kim was ranked only 31st in the world, as was He, and had only been eighth in the ranking round. Her most difficult match had come in round three against her teammate, Yun Hye-Yeong, who she defeated only 165-164. The final was a comfortable victory for Kim, 113-107, over He.
Finishing 54th in the ranking round was Italy’s Paola Fantato, who competed from a wheelchair, as she was the victim of poliomyelitis as a child.
