Ukrainian Tatyana Samolenko-Dorovskikh had been dominant in this event for the past few years, winning the 1988 Olympic gold, and the 1987 and 1991 World Championships. Yelena Romanova had been runner-up at the 1990 European Championship and the 1991 World Championships. The final was run in a languid 3:06 for the first kilometer. This led to a pack finish, with all the favorites together on the final backstretch. Ireland’s Sonia O’Sullivan led on the final turn, but Romanova jumped the field at the head of the stretch and was not caught, finally winning a major international title. Samolenko-Dorovskikh closed quickly for the silver but could not catch the Russian.
