The 1995 World Champion was Allen Johnson (USA), while the 1993 World Championships gold medalist was 1988 Olympic silver medalist, Colin Jackson (GBR). Jackson had also won the European and Commonwealth titles in 1990 and 1994. The two were considered co-favorites in Atlanta. But the final was not close. Johnson pulled clear at the fourth hurdle and won easily over American Mark Crear, while Jackson finished out of the medals in fourth place.
