Because professionals were not allowed in the 1984 tennis demonstration and entries restricted to those under 20 years old at the start of the year, the field was somewhat weak, but the men’s winner was Sweden’s Stefan Edberg, who would go on to become one of the greatest professionals in the coming years. He later won six Grand Slam singles titles, including two each at Wimbledon, the US Open, and the Australian Open. Edberg would also win an Olympic bronze medal in 1988, when tennis was returned to the Olympic Program. Edberg defeated Mexican Francisco Maciel, who would achieve a top world ranking of 35th in June 1986, in the final.
