The 1996 diving events were held at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center on the Georgia Tech campus in Atlanta, which was also the site of the swimming events, the water polo tournament, synchronized swimming, and the swimming section of the modern pentathlon. There were four diving events – 3-metre springboard and 10-metre platform for men and women, which had been the standard Olympic diving program since 1928, although in 2000, synchronized events would be added to expand the Olympic program. Chinese divers won three of four events, and 5 of 12 medals, with three nations winning two medals – Germany, Russia, and the United States.
The formats were different in 1996 as well. For most recent Olympics, the final round followed a qualifying round. But in Atlanta, the qualifying round advanced 18 divers to a semi-final round, from which 12 divers would advance to the final.
