The Olympic short track competitions where held in the Delta Center, which was renamed to the Salt Lake Ice Center during the Games to remove the sponsor name. The arena had been home to the NBA’s Utah Jazz since 1991, but hosted figure skating and short track during the 2002 Winter Games.
The short track program was extended with two new events, the 1,500 m for both men and women. The men’s competitions garnered more attention than in previous Games, due to the final races in the 1,000 and 1,500 m. Result-wise, the Games were dominated by Yang [A] Yang, who reached all the women’s finals and won two gold medals and a silver. In the men’s events, Canada’s Marc Gagnon won three medals, including two golds.
