For the mixed doubles only players who already played in the singles or doubles tournament were permitted to participate, and the tournament was to have been contested by 16 pairs, although the team of Garbiñe Muguruza and Rafael Nadal did not start.

Defending champions Vika Azarenka and Max Mirnyi from Belarus did not participate due to Azarenko’s pregnancy. The American pair Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jack Sock won the gold medal, by beating their compatriots Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram 6–7, 6–1, 10–7 in the final. It was the first time that a tennis tournament was decided by a match tie-break, the format used for mixed doubles in RIo. There were no clear favourites for this event and the top three seeds all lost their first round matches.
