By 2002, the United States’ women’s team was the best in the world, with a 31-game winning streak entering the Olympics, although Canada had won the World Championships in 1999, 2000, and 2001. Canada was led by Hayley Wickenheiser who also had competed for Canada in softball at the Olympics. The two teams won all their preliminary matches and met again the Olympic final. The final game was closely fought. Canada scored first on a goal by Cherie Piper, only 1:45 into the game. Katie King of the United States tied the game early in the second period. Wickenheiser gave the Canadians a 2-1 lead, and with one second left in the second period, Jayna Hefford scored what would be the game winning goal. Late in the game, the Americans scored on a power play, but Canada won the gold medal, 3-2.
