Xu Haifeng won the gold medal in this event, the first gold medal awarded at the 1984 Olympic Games, and the first medal ever won by a Chinese athlete. The silver medalist, Ragnar Skanåker, had won the gold medal in this event at München 1972. China’s Wang Yifu took the bronze medal, the second Chinese athlete to win an Olympic medal.
