Xu Haifeng won the gold medal in this event, the first gold medal awarded at the 1984 Olympic Games, and the first medal ever won by a Chinese athlete. The silver medalist, Ragnar Skanåker, had won the gold medal in this event in 2 at München. China’s Wang Yifu took the bronze medal, the second Chinese athlete to win an Olympic medal.
