The Canadian team ran an unratified world record of 49.3 in the heats. In the final, the US team took the early lead, but Canada pulled even at the first exchange. With the US having Betty Robinson, the 100 metre gold medalist, on the anchor leg, the Americans had some hope, but Myrtle Cook took the baton with a three-metre lead and she held on comfortably to give Canada a gold medal in world record time.
